Triathlon at Wild Rock

Spring 2010 brings a few new items to the floor at Wild Rock for triathletes and Duathletes.
First up is my favorite tri/TT frame for non yoga experts. If you can't place your palms on the floors with locked knees then you should check out this bike. It seems most high end bikes are designed to be ridden with bars so low that recreational athletes (me included) can't ride them. LOOK has addressed this crowd with the 576. I liked it so much I am riding one now as well. This is not an entry level bike at $2999 for the frame/fork/seatpost. Expect a complete bike to be $5000+ But it is a serious tool for the flexiblity constrained athlete (read 35+ for most folks). You can ride with your bars in a powerful and comfortable position without using ridiculous stem and spacer combinations that make for a flexy front end.

Next up in going fast in triathlon for the swimmers with ahem... not perfect form are the T1 Water Rover Wetsuits from DeSoto. They did their research. What they know, and what you need to know is, according to USAT regulations, there is no limitation as to the thickness of wetsuit rubber. That's right, there is no limit. This has been the case for more than 20 years. This means the common misperception that the limit is 5mm does not apply to almost all races in the USA and to many races worldwide. De Soto is the first company in the world to offer what is now indisputably the fastest and most buoyant wetsuit in the world! Again not the cheapest but some of the best. The extra bouyancy makes swimming flat a breeze. I have used the older model for 2 years and would never go back! Black Pearl top $199 and bottom $249; Rover top $299 and bottom $399. The final added bonus is being able to mix and match top and bottom sizes for a perfect fit. For taller folks there is no pulling down on the shoulders with a 2 piece design. For shorter swimmers the 2 piece design leaves no extra fabric around the waist to slow you down.

Drop by Wild Rock and check out these and other unique multisport products.

Scott's Rant
|
|
I lead a tough life but someone has to. I just returned from two weeks of cycling in Mallorca, Spain. It was a great trip with great riding, lovely people, scads of roadies and fine weather. But, I digress from my rant.
On with my angle of orneriness. I have been to Spain 7 times previously but we had been in Spain for almost 2 weeks before I noticed a difference that had never struck me before; very little garbage on the roadsides. If you ride locally, hardly a kilometer goes by without our seeing a cup, bag or bottle in the ditch or on the shoulder. Are Spaniards just tidier? Do they have people who clean up? Do they have foraging beasts that eat cups, bags and other tossed-away items?
No; Spain like a lot of Europe, practices slow food habits than North America. Even in the most touristy part of the island there are no drive-thrus, you can't get a coffee to go and the fast food industry is barely alive.
What a great thing! If you want a coffee you head into one of the hundreds of places with fine espresso machines, have a seat, chat with your friends and have your coffee in a porcelain mug complete with saucer and spoon. After enjoying your little respite from your day, the cup, saucer and spoon are washed and re-used! A legendary paradigm shift! When you are struck with a case of hunger you sit in a small café, order a snack and eat it. Your focus is on eating and enjoying your meal. I never saw people on the Blackberry or trying to multi-task other than gossiping and eating at the same time.
After reflecting on this, I have come to conclusion that the Spanish are not any tidier than us; they just don't produce the same amount of garbage in the first place. What a great idea, combine healthy eating with lower waste with higher satisfaction by taking 30-45 minutes to stop and eat properly.
The photo below is of a town square filled with cyclists who have stopped for a bite to eat. Dave Giromallato took the photo of us and a hundred or so other cyclists in Petra, Spain.
