A Year with Di2
|
|
It seems so long ago that I used to have to adjust my shifting and change cables as part of my bike maintenance. Early in 2010 I made the plunge and purchased a Shimano DI-2 Group to put on my road bike. This set of shifters is electronic and does not use mechanical steel cables like normal derailleurs and shifters. It was a bit of an expensive experiment as it sells for a premium over normal Shimano Dura-ace which is itself a premium product.
Initially there were concerns of the battery going dead, performance, ease of use etc.
A year later and 8000km on the groupo, I have not found any reason to ever go back. I have only charged the battery 3 times and all 3 times the battery charge light was not on it was just my own insecurities that caused me to plug it in. The repercussions of not charging your battery for 2000+km is first the front derailleur dies and on it's last gasp leaves you in small ring. After many more rear shifts the rear derailleur then shuts down and leaves you in the middle of the cassette. For this information I am going by the Shimano technical papers as I charged the battery every 6 months whether it needed it or not.
So how does it work? Impeccably, precisely and stunningly. The front derailleur shifts up or down even if you are standing and climbing. I have never seen this level of performance on any other groupo. In addition, it automatically trims the front derailleur so it does not rub whether you are in the 11 or the 25 on the back. It has an auto tune feature that is magic. If I ride a Shimano rear wheel and then switch to a Mavic, the shifting usually needs a little tweak. With DI-2, while you are riding, you shift into the middle of the rear casette and hold down the handlebar mounted button and keep pedalling. The brain then shifts automatically from smallest to largest and adjusts the shifting in about 10 seconds. Done, and I mean done, because there is no cable to stretch so the shifting remains perfect until you crash or do something else dumb.
Finally, for some reason the chain has lasted an incredible amount of time. I usually get about 3,000km out of chain before it is stretched. With the Di-2 I have 8,000km on it and counting. Maybe this is due to it auto trimming? or a more precise shift than my fingers provide? I don't know why this might be but it is lasting beyond expectations.
In conclusion, yes, it is expensive and will cost you a little over $3,000 for a full group but if you enjoy the best performance combined with the least maintenance it is unbeatable. Another hint.... is Shimano will launch an Ultegra electronic groupo this fall at a more affordable price.
