Banff Film Fest

What we've all been waiting for! The Banff Film Fest is back on January 23th and 24th. The first night is at Showplace and the second at the Gordon Best Theatre. Click on the picture to see what films we are choosing from this year.

If you have never been, this is an evening that has something for everyone! There are films on skiing, base jumping, climbing, snowboarding, cycling, travel, mountaineering and mountain culture. There are short films that make you laugh, ones that make you think and extreme sports to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Tickets are at Wild Rock at $15 each or both nights for $25. The Film Fest magazine is free to one and all. Tickets make a great gift!

The 12 Days of Christmas by Wild Rock

Wild Rock has decided to get into the spirit of the holidays this year by offering a special price on one item a day for the twelve days before Christmas. The items will be things that NEVER go on sale.

How do you find out what the item of the day is? Come to the store! We will also post the item on the website. If you would like us to notify you by email for all twelve days, send us an email now by clicking the link below and we'll send you the details every day!

The items will only be on sale for the one day and only while supplies last. Be sure you don't miss out!

Soft Shell

Over the past three seasons we have witnessed a leap in fabric technologies that rivals the invention of fleece in the early 1980’s or the introduction of Goretex at about the same time. This new technology, referred to as “Soft Shell”, helps to deal with some of the limitations of traditional waterproof/breathable fabrics that most outdoors folks have come to know and love. Although we all have a Goretex jacket that we love to wear the fact is that waterproof fabric, although versatile, is actually designed to perform at it’s best in very wet conditions. For most of us that covers only a small amount of the time that we are outside. The concept behind Soft Shell is that it performs best for what 90% of outdoors people do 90% of the time. Sounds good doesn’t it?

Soft Shell clothing is made up of a stretch-woven outer fabric laminated (usually) to a light fleece. This package creates a highly water-repellant, very breathable garment with great wind-shear. The comfort range achieved is amazing. I purchased a soft shell jacket last December and ended up using it on a daily basis right through until late spring and then on to cool summer evenings. It is by far the most versatile piece of outdoor clothing that I have ever worn. As you might imagine, that is saying something!

Sy Meheen, ski patrol supervisor at Keystone resort had this to say: “We were the first patrol team to switch. So far, Soft Shell has exceeded our expectations. It is tough and damn near waterproof. More importantly, it breathes well during high aerobic activity. We used to sweat under our jackets, but not anymore.”

If you are a hiker, XC skier or just walking to work there will be a piece of Soft Shell clothing to suit your needs. Soft Shell clothing is available from most of the manufacturers that we represent including Patagonia, The North Face and Arc’teryx.

Kieran is one of our fearless leaders and the buyer of our sportswear for over ten years. We like to think he knows something about this stuff.
