How to get in a Kayak |
|
(Without falling in!)
Getting in and out of your kayak is the time you are most likely to tip. To avoid an embarrassing swim follow this easy maneuver. The same maneuver works at a dock or a rocky shoreline. In order to exit your boat just reverse the technique. Do it this way and you are guaranteed a stable easy carefree entry or exit from your boat. Step 1 Place the boat in the water close to the dock or shore. Place the paddle perpendicular to the boat with the majority of the paddle on the shore or dock. The paddle should rest on the very back edge of the cockpit. Step 2 Crouch by the boat with the paddle behind you. Place your boat side hand on the paddle gripping the paddle shaft and the cockpit. The shore side hand should be placed well inshore close to the center of the paddle. Step 3 While placing your weight 60% on the inshore hand and 40% on the boat side hand slip your feet into the cockpit and wiggle your rear end onto the seat. During this whole period keep your weight on your hands and towards the shore. Step 4 Now that you are comfortable seated in the kayak, swing the paddle around to the front paddling position and away you go. Exiting the Boat Approach the shore or dock. Place the paddle behind you wit the majority of its length on the shore or dock and reverse the above procedure. Instead of wiggling your bottom into the boat wiggle your bottom onto the shore or dock. |
| Sears National Kids Cancer Ride |
|
Local cyclist, Brian Simpson, is riding across Canada in 19 days to support kids with cancer!
On June 2, 2008, 60 seasoned cyclists from across Canada will set out from Vancouver on the inaugural Sears National Kids Cancer Ride (SNKCR) in support of Canadian children with cancer. They will be joined along the way by thousands of cyclists who will participate in shorter community based rides as the National Riders make there way across Canada. With every pedal stroke cyclists will raise money for kids and families fighting this debilitating disease. The route visits many of Canada's 17 pediatric cancer centres where cyclists will meet with media and the cancer community to share inspiring stories of strength and hope on this historic ride. And finally, after 7,600 km and 19 days, these courageous voyagers will dip their bike wheels in the Atlantic off Halifax.
