Canoe and Kayak Sale!
 canoe sale
Wild Rock is holding it's biggest canoe and kayak sale of the last 10 years Saturday June 20th at Roger's Cove, Little Lake on Maria St. MAP

We will have a huge assortment of canoes and kayaks from Wilderness Systems, Necky, Mad River Canoes, Quessy Canoes and Heritage Kayaks

There won't be a better day to buy a canoe or kayak.  These sales will not be repeated.

Not only is this a great opportunity to purchase a new canoe or kayak at great prices but you will also help two very worthy causes as well.

$50-$100 per boat sold will be donated to the Canadian Canoe Museum by Wild Rock.  This museum is a local and international treasure that needs our support.

The second way to make your new boat purchase help others is through The Paddle it Forward Program
Bring your old seaworthy canoe or kayak to the sale and donate it to Scouts Canada Brownsea Base and save 10% immediately on the purchase of any Wilderness System, Mad River or Wavesport boat, then mail in a copy of your sales receipt and receive another 10% Mail in rebate from Confluence.  You will also qualify for a charitable donation tax receipt from Scouts Canada.

This is a 20% savings and a tax incentive on any new Mad River canoe, Wilderness Systems kayak or Wavesport kayak.

All boat sales from other manufacterers qualify only for the Wild Rock/Canoe Museum donation.

Best of the last 6 months
I have gathered up a few items and bits of interest that have captivated my attention in the last 6 months.

I had the recent pleasure of inheriting a Gore Oxygeoxygen jktn Jacket for cycling from Dave Woodfine as it was too small for him.  I have never worn such a breathable waterproof jacket.  It's first test was the Around the Bay 30k running race.  The first 15km were in a complete downpour.  I remained dry throughout and even when the the deluge ended I did not over heat one iota.  That was a first as there are plenty of waterproof jackets out there but few that you do not over-heat in when exercising hard.  Since then I have worn it extensively on my bike and have become even more convinced.

The nathan speed 2Nathan Speed 2 Hydration Belt is another winner.  I have tried various ways of running with water and end up either wearing a hole in my back with flimsy carriers and regular bottles, getting a sore arm from carrying a bottle, or getting frustrated trying to re-holster a bottle one handed in the Fuel Belts or Profile race belts.  The Speed 2 solves these issues.  There is very little movement and it is well balanced, this combined with rigid holsters make for perfect comfort and easy re-holstering with one hand.

When training hard half the battle is recovering before the next session.  I have been very pleased with SKINS compression tights and socks.  The tights have been superb for cool weather running and over cycling shorts for cold cycling.  They fit well, have stood up to dozens of washes and I honestly feel they do help.  The recovery socks have been amazing.  I have worn them after most of my long runs and after hard interval sessions on the bike and running.  There is a clear benefit when it comes to reducing sore aching muscles.  I work on the sales floor most Sundays after doing a long-run in the morning.  The leg pain on the sales floor has decreased dramatically when wearing the socks.

Universal Sports Online Cycling TV is a great discovery.  It is free and offers many cycling races that we can't otherwise see.  Check out the Giro D'Italia and other fine races on-line.

The Peterborough Cycling Club has always has it's Thursday Night Ride but some other stand out rides include the Monday Night Rec Ride, Tuesday Night Mountain Bike Ride and the Sunday Tour.  The Sunday Tour takes you on the "best of" local roads and is a great way to learn where to ride.  The Mtn Bike ride is similarly a great way to learn about all the hidden local gems.  The Monday night "no-drop" ride is a casual, friendly group ride primer.  Finally if you know a kid aged 10-16 who would like to get into road cycling have them check out the Youth Ride that leaves the Wild Rock parking lot at 4:30pm on Sundays.

The best kid things I have come across are really about making sure adults don't contaminate their kids with their issues thus giving the kids issues in the future.  For a good read check out A Nation of Wimps: The High Cost of Invasive Parenting.  I read the book cover to cover and thanked my parents for raising me on a diet of dirt, good times and bad times.  If you don't like reading give a listen to the CBC podcast Hurried Infants.  This is more about avoiding the urge to raise super kids instead of letting kids grow up like kids.

Enough of this kid stuff.  How important is play for adults?   Wild Rock's tag line "Go out and Play" came to mind when I heard the great CBC podcast Getting Serious about Play.

Runnerboy MattFinally, have you ever seen something that completely mystified you?  We have all heard of crop circles and the Pyramids but what about our own Matt Stetson running?  He has always been going on about how he would never run. The truth is stranger than fiction.

Scott's Rant
scott and kathy murisonIn the past you have endured my dribble about going from a mono-athlete to a tri-athlete and the pains and tribulations I enjoyed.  Now I have really stepped out there.  I managed to become a father to a little girl named Clara 8 months ago.

My wife, Kathy, who not only whipped my ass into shape for triathlons, launched our little sprogglet into the world head first and healthy.  I believe that was one of the most athletic feats I have witnessed.  Power lifting, shot put, leg press, and deep sea diving all in one.  If Kathy did not have my utmost respect before she does now.

We were never really baby people but apparently having kids would be  "rewarding" and " enjoyable".   According to the media as a whole and many well wishers our life as we knew it was supposed to end at 5pm on September 19th when Clara become eligible for a SIN number.   Kathy and I would never have sex again, grow fat and lazy, cease traveling, not sleep, not shower, and certainly not stay as active.

Am I ever glad they were wrong.  We are very fortunate to have purchased a Chariot child stroller/jogger.  This little piece of independence has enabled us to continue being active (running, skiing and cycling) albeit in a modified way.  Clara has logged over 1500km in her Chariot now.

Since she was a few weeks old she was bundled in her snowsuit and placed in her infant bivy and run all around Peterborough as Kathy and I trained for the Peterborough ½ marathon and the Around the Bay 30K Run.  In the cold of winter we added a down sleeping bag as a cocoon and she was snug as a bug.  Her hands were always colder in her crib at night then after a run at 15 below.  As she grew she graduated to a sling in the Chariot and could now see where she was going and what was happening in the outside world.

When the snow accumulated Kathy cross-country skied pulling the Chariot.  This made a great day of family skiing and one heck of a work out.  Clara was either sleeping or all smiles as the landscape whizzed passed. Kathy pushed Clara around the course for the entire ½ marathon; an impressive duet to say the least.  Later Kathy and I took turns pushing Clara at the Around The Bay race.  In the over 1500km Clara has had only one bad day which Kathy rescued by breastfeeding standing on the side of a road in February in running tights. It was with much excitement we removed the down sleeping bag this spring.

Clara, Kathy and I were off to Spain for a cycling holiday.  We packed up the Chariot in a travel bag and off we went.  Airlines are nice enough to fly the Chariots for free.  We spent a week cycling on the island of Mallorca where Clara got to experience diaper changes and feeds in many interesting and unusual places.

Clara is now being pushed as we run and pulled behind our bikes.  After a long winter of being sealed inside the Chariot and away from the elements Clara enjoyed a breeze in her face on a recent warm outing on the bike.  We stopped for a diaper change and feed in a field near Millbrook were she experienced grass and the sounds of spring birds.  For me it was great time with Clara and a solid 65km ride.

You know this kid thing is not too bad.  Kids take longer to housebreak than my dog but we are having fun along the way.  8 months down and eager to experience the next 25 years.  Thanks Chariot.

Minden 150 Bike Tour
Minden 150On August 15, on Homecoming Day of the Minden Sesquicentennial Celebration, an exciting new event is taking place.  A bike tour will be held with a choice of rides for cyclists of all abilities.  For the hearty, enthusiastic cyclists there will be a 150 km ride, with each kilometer marking one of the years of Minden's history.

For those who love to cycle but find the 150 km ride daunting, there is also a 70 km ride, which will allow the participants to enjoy varied terrain through Haliburton County.  There will also be a 30 km ride, giving  everyone a chance to find a route that is comfortable for them.

All rides will start at the Minden Community Centre in the morning of the 15th of August, and they will be followed by a delicious meal and camaraderie with fellow cyclists.  Please check out the ride as well as the other interesting Minden Sesquicentennial activities at the www.minden150.ca website.

Hope to see you there.
YMCA Strong Kids Fundraiser Week
thanksymca July 6th-12th at Wild Rock
Bring your Y Members card and receive a 10% discount on any regular priced merchandise.  Wild Rock in turn will donate 5% of all Y Member sales that week to the campaign.

100% of the money that is raised stays in the community and helps support children and youth programs at the Peterborough YMCA.

Weather it be a P.A. Day Camp, a membership for a deserving child or a week at summer camp, the experiences and memories will last a lifetime.
This is what the YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign is all about.

With the current economic downturn, they have seen the demand for assisted memberships/programs double.  They have already received more applications in 2009 than in all of 2008.

With your help, we can assist more families.
