Travel Free and Easy With Your Carry-On!
Eagle Creek Hovercraft 22We all know how to pack for a regular trip and endure the barrage of fees now charged for checked baggage.  Here are some tips for skipping the charges and traveling free and easy.

The Art of the Carry-on

Use your bed as the landing pad. Think head to toe, except in reverse. Start with your feet and remember you only have two! The trick here is to find a set of kicks that can be worn casually as well as in almost-formal situations. If you like to exercise a pair of dark coloured cross-trainers can also make the cut.
Now add socks (which can be stuffed into the shoes you just picked), underwear, exercise wear, skirts, pants, shirts and sweaters. The best practice would be to group each into an outfit. Try your best to make your pants or skirt match up with multiple tops.  With some thought you should be able to pack half as many bottoms as tops. You only need one outfit per day, minus one when you consider that you are going to wear one to the airport.  In other words, if you are out for 4 days you need 3 days of outfits.  As for hats and gloves, don't pack them: throw them into the pockets of the jacket you are going to wear.
Now let's move onto toiletries. The trick is determining what NOT to bring. With hotels supplying a bevy of amenities, most items in your medicine cabinet can stay home. On the "do not pack" list: hairdryers, any toiletry that comes in a full size bottle, anything breakable, and medicines except those for rare diseases or maladies. Investing a few bucks in a travel bottle set will downsize your traveling medicine cabinet significantly.

Let the Packing Begin

We recommend using a travel backpack rather than a shoulder bag as your companion piece. This saves your back and keeps your arms free. Now let's organize the inside of the bag for easy packing, maximizing space and minimizing wrinkles.   Wild Rock now carries a great assortment of Eagle Creek's ingenious tools for travelers. We suggest using Eagle Creek Pack-It® Folders, Cubes and Half Cubes, Shoe Sac and Compressor Bags. Place your socks and underwear in one of the Half Cubes.  Pack-It® Folders help you compress shirts, sweaters and pants while keeping them wrinkle free.
One last hint: check in online the night before you go. If you have succeeded in packing everything in your carry-on, you can proceed directly to the gate with your boarding pass in hand.
A well-packed carry-on can make your journey faster, easier and safer. So choose carry-on and treat yourself to a grande latte with your free hand.

For a Longer Journey

TNF Longhaul 30If you are headed out on a longer adventure and find yourself in need of more cargo space, Wild Rock has added a selection of Eagle Creek and The North Face travel luggage in a broad range of sizes.  From roller/carry-on size Eagle Creek Hovercraft 20 to the maximum legal pack size Eagle Creek ORV 30 or mid-sized Switchback wheeled backpacks, Wild Rock has something to suit your needs.

Badger Balms
Badger Balms
It is officially March and while there is still some snow and ice lurking around, it is undeniable that the sun is getting higher in the sky. With the hint of spring in the air, we at Wild Rock thought it an appropriate time to introduce one of our brand new environmentally conscious products from Badger Balm. This little company is committed to sourcing natural ingredients that 'respect and protect farmers, ecosystems, producers, esteemed customers and the land we all share.' Badgers philosophy is that 'plants soothe and chemicals confuse' and it is the motivation behind their natural, organic body products. Over 90% of their products have been certified at the highest levels of USDA Organic certification and they continue to strive for more. Along with the SPF 15 and 30 sunscreen are various balms to care for your body - from your feet to your hands.

How is this sunscreen different?

Using a physical barrier method, versus a chemical protection reduces the exposure of the user and the producers of the sunscreen to harmful chemicals. Badger utilizes the mineral zinc oxide, a naturally occurring mineral touted as one of the most environmentally sound ingredients to use in sunscreen. It is important to note that as microionized zinc oxide is produced by high temperature processing of minerals that contain zinc, it will not be rated by the USDA as organic. However, the rest of the ingredients are 100% natural and most of those are USDA certified as organic.

Why Green Products?

The innovation of products and companies that transparently self-evaluate their environmental impact allows them to make important changes to the products they make and how they are produced. Transparency in the evaluation and the communication of the findings encourages every one of us to strive to make changes, however small, to reduce our own footprint, and take the steps towards a greener world.

At Wild Rock we acknowledge our connection and commitment to the environment and make a conscious effort to invite companies into the store who share our perspective. Patagonia says it best with their philosophy of 'best product, least harm' and we strive to continue to support companies, like Badger and Patagonia, that continue to operate with the living earth in mind.

Wild Rock Staff Running?
Are they being chased by a pack of wild dogs?

Yes, indeed, the Wild Rock crew set out on a bit of a team building, soul searching adventure last October when Tanya McNeil came up with the idea of entering a team in the YMCA ½ Marathon held every February here in Peterborough. What a great idea many thought. "Great" because they were NOT runners and thus had no idea what they were agreeing to.

For the next several months a band of merry runners who had once been cyclists, skiers or anything but runners trained in everything from haphazard to regimented manners. Wayne, Anne, Liz and Noel started sensibly, working their runs up from 2km and walk and runs to 22km 2 weeks before the event. Sean started in earnest making many suffer with his thirst for speed before jumping of the train 6 weeks before the event and nary running a mile for weeks. It was his secret super long taper. Kieran on the other hand fit in the odd run here and there (always sneakily attending the key workouts) and showed up fit and ready; that being said, when is he not fit and ready???

Some great sights were beheld in the early weeks. Both Wayne and Noel had the appearance of newly born Wildebeests on the Saharan Plains. Their long limbs, gangly and uncoordinated and visually looking like they could collapse at any time during the first few runs. Kieran showing up at 7:00am for a pre-work run! Casey, Liz and Wayne returning from epic arctic runs to shower and warm up at Wild Rock before work.

Some went into the event to do their best, others just wanted to see what this running thing was all about. In the end we had a great day and followed it with an evening of merry making at the Ritz Deli North Pub. All survived and some of the performances were impressive. Some are saying they will even do another!

Many thanks to Bob and his gang at the YMCA for putting on this well run event.
I was very proud of our crew as, for many, it was their first running event.
