Peterborough psychotherapist Brian Nichols, a 58-year-old who runs his practice from his 160-year-old East City home, has been visiting Zimbabwe for several years. Nichols arrived in Zimbabwe in early January with Millbrook lawyer Julie Kirkpatrick and Peterborough carpenter Jeff Mathers, owner of Hickory Lane Kitchens on Perry St. The three spent a month volunteering at the Salvation Army's Howard Hospital, which is located 80 km outside of Harare, Zimbabwe before heading home. They donated all their time, possessions, and leave solely with the clothes on their back. Jeff, Julie, Galen and Brian are inviting you to come on out to Splice Lounge to share in their "Stories from Zimbabwe" on March 3rd, 2011 at the Splice Lounge 379 George St. North, Peterborough ON. Going Somewhere? |
|
Well it happened, an unseasonable day in February where temperatures rose to a balmy 10 degrees. People poured out of buildings, tossing aside their winter clothing and took to the streets, paths, and parks to revel in the glorious day. A day like that has the ability to send us into hallucinatory fantasies of spring and summer days, sandy beaches, or a day on the water, asphalt, or into the woods. When we awoke the morning after that warm day we were hit with the cold-shocking reality that, yes, it was still February and winter was not giving up yet. With that information it is important to realize you have choice, a decision you may have already made months or even a year ago; Stay and re-don that warm coat you bought to make it through the winter OR make like a snowbird and fly? Lets just put it this way...

New technology for Spring Ski Season!
With Spring approaching and the temperature rising some of the best Nordic skiing of the season awaits! Skiing at temperatures near zero has always made for tricky waxing conditions, or sticky ones if you are using klister! New "Zero" skis from Salomon and Madshus however will keep you classic skiing into those warm spring days! These skis use a special rubberized base material on the grip zone that gives you waxless ski grip with the great glide of a waxed ski!
The base material can be tuned for differing ski conditions with a quick sand which raises "hairs" on the ski base to grip the snow on those hard to wax days. Skis using this technology were used during the recent Vancouver Olympics and are being seen as a "must-have" in the ski bag. Zero skis from Salomon and Madshus are in stock are ready to ski their way through Spring!

Mountain Hardwear Giveaway!

Every category of products has features that define it. A great bicycle is light, stiff and comfortable. A good sleeping bag will be light, warm and compressible. Backpacks too have characteristics that should be aspired to, features that define excellence. The designers at Mountain Hardwear addressed each of the key points when they conceived the new Fluid series packs. Light, comfortable, versatile and convenient to use the new range of Fluid packs is also competitively priced.
Although generally well conceived, the central design concept that makes these packs unique is the HardWave back panel. It offers structure and support to the wearer with almost no increase in the overall weight of the pack. The unique panel ensure the pack moves well on even the most active wearer while offering enough support for a heavy load.
To round out this versatile package each pack in the series has a built in organizer and can accommodate any hydration system. From multi-day backpackers to day hikers there is a Fluid series pack for you. Arriving soon at Wild Rock.

Scott's Rant
|

Coping with anarchy by searching for clarity.
Maybe I am old now and before I had my head in the sand but there does seem to be an increasing amount of background and often foreground anarchy on this planet of ours. It is like there are too many rats on this sinking ship and we are starting to get cannibalistic. Wikileaks, Libya, Afganistan, Egypt, Iran, BP, Berlusconi, Sudan, pirates, debt, banks, concussions, oil etc, etc
In our immediate control all we can do is not spread or espouse hate and intolerance, not fund negative people/organizations and their actions, vote the best we can and set a good example for others.
Where is Scott going with this?
With all this going on it makes it important to be at and do our best. That means getting rest, eating well and getting some clarity. Clarity=free from obscurity and easy to understand; the comprehensibility of clear expression. Sounds nice; how do we get some.
There are a couple of ways. No doubt investing the time and energy to get well rehearsed in the art of meditation would be a healthy habit. If that is not your bag of tricks I have found doing some form of activity that is taxing enough and stretches your ability takes you to a similar place. Hear me out.
If you are climbing and are just barely hanging on I dare you to think about your income tax refund. If you are trying to run your best 10k running race, I challenge you to think about the political issues in the mid-east and their ramifications on your life as you try to finish to last 3 km. As you are cycling in your next group ride with your front wheel 15" from the rear wheel in front of you hoping to get enough air in your lungs the fact that Russia is making it tough for some of Europe when it comes to natural gas won't be bugging you. As you scout a rapid on your next canoe or kayak trip and decide to run it the furthest thing from your mind will be another minority Canadian majority in the next Parliament.
By doing activities like this you will be giving your brain a moment of clarity. When the activity is done your body may be tired but your brain will be refreshed. You will be in a better position to make decisions and it is with better decisions we make the world and our lives a nicer place for all.
I'll be looking for deep clarity in the hills of Mallorca as I explore the level of suffering that makes me a better person.
