Fox River AXT

Fox River - A Company We Can Be Proud Of

Every once in a while we try to bring to your attention a company whose products we sell that is cutting edge in some way.  There are many strong, environmentally and socially responsible companies in the outdoor industry but one stands particularly tall.  Fox River Mills is a family owned sock manufacturer.  They are both a business success story as well as an environmental success story.   The company has been making socks in the US for 110 years.  They have survived and thrived in an environment where most manufactures have long since moved to China.  While many manufacturers have been forced to cut costs in order to compete with Asian competition Fox River has focused on efficiency.  In striving for manufacturing efficiency they have broken boundaries of environmental consciousness.  Most impressively, they started to improve their factory's environmental impact back in 1974, before most of us were thinking about environmental issues.

Fox river has made many, many updates to their facility over the years.  There are far too many to discuss here but there is one development that I just have to share.  Traditionally, the shrink process of any fabric manufacture has been very chemically intensive.  Fox River has developed an organic process that ensures that the wastewater from the process is actually safe to drink.  That is just one small example of their commitment to great, responsibly manufactured socks.

For those detail-oriented readers follow the link for the full story. foxsox.com

...Oh, yeah, they make very, very good socks!  Over and above everything else Fox River strives to make the best socks on the market for outdoor use.  To Fox River the best sock is one that keeps the wearer comfortable in a broad range of outdoor pursuits as well as out-lasting competitor products (often by as much as 300%).  And that is just good business!

Can't get Comfortable?
If you are riding less than you would like because you are not comfortable on your bike we can help. Wild Rock has a bike fit studio in the basement where we can help you get the most comfort out of your bike. Many people don't realize how many adjustments are available on a bike to tailor the fit. We can change handle bar height, width and reach. The seat can be changed for one of the 25+ models we carry and can be moved not only up and down but forward and backwards. Cranks are available in different lengths and pedal/cleats can be adjusted wider or narrower. Some where in the mix is comfort. Let us help you find it. Call 705-745-9133 to book an appointment. Appointment are available Monday to Friday only. Bike Fits start at $50.

Do you like the Tour de France?
If you liked watching the TDF, in May make sure to take in Italy's Tour. Arguably the course is harder and the racing more explosive. Check out the The Giro D'Italia.giro
Map to the Future of Great Cycling in the Kawarthas
Cycling MapLast summer an old friend came to Peterborough to visit.  His life was falling apart and he needed to talk.  He and I have raced our bikes together or against each other for more than 25 years so naturally we headed out on the road for hours of bike-therapy.  That is the way aging roadies do it; ride and talk, talk and ride.  After about three hours of our bike-counseling ride my friend of many years looked up and said, "you know, man, the riding here is really awesome".  He continued to ask why more people don't come here to ride, why people don't talk about how good the riding is in and around Peterborough.  He got me thinking ...and when I get thinking ...

I was now faced with a problem and a challenge.  Yes, the riding in and around the Kawarthas rivals anything to be found in Ontario.  If you know where to go the roads are varied, beautiful and quiet.  ...That I realized was the problem.  Most people don't know where to go to find the best riding.  Even many local riders don't know where the best roads are so how would a visiting rider ever find them?  My conclusion was that we needed a road cycling map for Peterborough County.

Late last summer a few like-minded roadies and myself criss-crossed the county ranking all the roads with their general level of awesomeness for cycling.  Smooth pavement, rustic rural roads as well as hundreds of kilometers of scenic gravel roads were dutifully catalogued.  We compiled as much information as we could, engaged the services of the city and county mapping offices, and the skills of the good people at Peterborough Green-up and Page Designs.   With the efforts of these dynamic people we now have a great resource for both local and visiting cyclists.

I am very excited that this hard work bore fruit and the map is now a reality.  The free map will be available here at Wild Rock (as well as other locations) and distributed farther afield by Peterborough and the Kawarthas Tourism.  In addition, through this process, cycling and cycle-tourism is finally on the radar of Peterborough and the Kawartha Tourism.  It is our hope that over the years our beautiful area will become an important cycling destination.

Whether you are a new cyclist or seasoned rider I am willing to bet that there are roads on the map that you have never ridden. Thanks to the generous support of the sponsors of the map, it is free.  Go out and explore!

Cheers,
Kieran

Scott's Rant
Hi Folks,

A quick update on the Wild Rock real estate rumor mill; we were entertaining 4 different options.  Expanding up, back and or down at the present location on Charlotte and St. and moving entirely.  As it stands moving has been all but completely dropped from the roster.

We are now examining how best to get more useable space within our modest budget in our present location.  If nothing else this exercise has been interesting on a sociological/psychological level.  We experienced angry comments, hostile people, supportive folks and finally what we had most of all were concerned customers.

We really appreciated the concerned ones!  I'll keep you updated on any conclusions and feel free to ad your 2 cents worth via e-mail or in person.

The importance of goals.
When I see friends, customers, clients and family stumbling along at a 6 out of 10 quite often the root cause seems to be a lack of goals.   For the cyclist/athlete it could be a time trial time, it could be to finish an event or it could be to beat your buddy on a ride.  For the homeowner it could be 3 simple tasks done before summer is over.  It might be your weight or some other nagging facet of your life.  The folks I see who are nailing 9 out of 10's on the satisfaction level seem to be the ones who nailed down a goal, stated it no matter how small or trivial and are now along the route to ticking it off.

It seems without goals, there is no reward feedback loop to engage in.  There is less to feel good about and give yourself a high 5 even if it was just getting the garbage out every week for a month!

Stick your neck out and put down a goal.  We have 75ish years on this planet we might as well get some things done and feel good about it in the mean time.
