Special Blend
Wild Rock is very pleased to announce the return of Special Blend snowboard clothing. From first chair to last call Special Blend has you covered. Great quality waterproof, breathable outerwear from Special Blend is designed to keep you warm and dry on the slopes. Special Blend has a generous street fit like Burton's Analog or Ronin clothing. If you are looking for a more technical, closer fit try the regular Burton line or Four Square. Wild Rock has a great selection of all these brands. Special Blend.com

Libtech
We have brought in Libtech snowboards. Not only do they offer cutting edge technology but they also offer a great Canadian made environmental story. Their Magna-Traction edges offer a gentle waved steel edge. Think of using a bread knife on the hard pack. Banana technology offers rocker instead of camber. Gives the board great pop and is very forgiving. The top decks are made of a bio-plastic made of castor beans. The sidewalls are made of a Soya based material and they use low VOC epoxies to minimize off gassing.

 Wild Rock's Green Index

Starting this fall, most new products here at Wild Rock will have a small Green Index line at the bottom of the price tag.  The details are below but the simple idea is that the higher the number a product earns the better it is from an environmental sustainability standpoint.

Our goal with the following green index is to give our clientele a more clear idea of the true environmental impact of their purchase here at Wild Rock.  This is a very difficult task as, not only is the target moving, but there are so many measurable variables.  We cannot know every practice that each company takes part in so this index is based on the information that respective companies freely share regarding each product.  Although we do not know the internal practices of all the companies we deal with we can rest assured that as leaders of the outdoor industry, most are internally committed to recycling, carpooling, conservation, etc.
The Wild Rock Green Index is a work in progress.  We hope you find it useful when selecting goods at our store or making comparisons.  For the time being if an item has no number on the Green Index line then we simply have not yet rated it.  The Index is here for all of us so please feel free to comment upon it.  We will do our best to consider your input and include it as the Index evolves.

Introducing Westcomb and eVENT!

Westcomb JacketI am proud to announce that Wild Rock is now stocking a selection of Westcomb technical outerwear.  This little Canadian (that's right, I said Canadian!) manufacturer is focused on bringing high performance, beautifully crafted outerwear to the North American market.  Although the brand was only established in 2007 the father and son team behind Westcomb has been building some of the best outerwear on the planet for years.  As their primary customer (a high-end, technical, beautifully made line of outdoor apparel - any guesses?) started to move most of it's manufacturing to factories in China they increasing found their cutting-edge factory quiet.  Westcomb was born from the combination of outdoor passion, experience building some of the world's greatest technical garments and a commitment to Canadian manufacturing.

Although I am very happy to have the rare opportunity to be able to introduce Wild Rock customers to a new Canadian manufacturer my excitement is as much about the fabrics they have chosen to use.  In particular, Westcomb builds their waterproof/breathable garments with eVENT.  eVENT has taken the outdoor world by storm over the last few years winning product awards from every major magazine as well as accolades from the American Alpine Institute.  The big buzz on eVENT is that it's ability to retain it's breathability in a huge range of conditions is unparalleled.  I have been using the Mirage jacket for the best part of a year and the performance is outstanding.  In a huge range of conditions I can't say that I have ever out-sweated it.  I certainly can't say that for any other waterproof jacket I have ever worn.  I would love to say more about the technical aspects of the fabric but the seminar I sat through last winter was far beyond my comprehension.  Suffice it to say that the folks at eVENT are very, very smart!  As I failed completely to put it into my own words I have copied to most relevant information below directly from the eVENT website.  First read on then come on down to Wild Rock for a look.
Cheers,
Kieran
  eVENT®
Question conventional wisdom. We do every day. That kind of thinking led us to wonder: "Do we have to feel so clammy in our waterproof and so-called, "breathable" gear? Is it possible to stay dry without sacrificing comfort?" These questions led us to develop eVENT ® Fabric.
eVENT Fabric is a Direct Venting™ waterproof barrier that marks a significant advancement in ePTFE laminate technology. Using proprietary and patented Dry System™ technology, eVENT Fabric sets a new standard for comfort by allowing perspiration to dissipate and vent without saturating the inside of the fabric.
At the core of eVENT Fabric is an ePTFE (expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene) film that has been rendered oil-repellant, and thereby free from body-oil contamination, via a method that retains both the inherent open-pore structure of the membrane as well as its hydrophobic properties.
The eVENT family of fabrics are the smartest choice for athletes and adventurers who need and demand the highest possible performance and comfort from their apparel and footwear.
Most importantly, eVENT Fabric presents an improvement you will actually feel. For more information on how we determined this, read about our field-testing program.
Direct Venting™ vs. "Two-Step Moisture Transport"
Not only does eVENT® Fabric breathe at unprecedented levels - it does so in a different manner than existing waterproof/breathables.
Other waterproof/breathable technologies, including previous ePTFE technology, do not literally "breathe" but instead move moisture in two s-l-o-w steps by a process of diffusion through a polyurethane layer. In this process, perspiration vapor is first condensed into liquid form and is absorbed into the PU coating on the inside of the fabric. Then, body heat begins to push that dampness through to the outside of the fabric where it can finally evaporate. In this system, moisture vapour must condense into liquid in order to pass through the PU layer.
Because the anti-contamination treatment used in eVENT Fabrics does not cover the ePTFE membrane with a polyurethane coating, all the millions upon millions of pores in the material remain open, allowing them to breathe at their full potential. Sweated moisture vapour vents directly to the outside of the fabric in one easy step that we call Direct Venting.
eVENT® Membrane
At 5000x magnification, one can see the truly open-pore structure that is key to eVENT® fabric's unprecedented performance. Water from the outside cannot enter, but perspiration vapour from the inside can escape through the membrane's microscopic "nano" vents. This allows for a unique method of breathability that provides a huge and highly noticeable comfort advantage for the user.
The Others
Other waterproof fabrics, including others based on ePTFE membranes, contain a solid layer of polyurethane. These fabrics require perspiration vapour to condense into liquid and soak the PU-layer before enough body heat is generated to force that moisture through to the outside of the fabric. This method of "breathing" is not effective at providing noticable comfort.
Dry System Technology™
Making a fabric waterproof is easy. Nothing to brag about. The real trick is making a waterproof fabric that doesn't cause you to soak in your own perspiration. Hence, all the fuss about "breathability". It's been over twenty years since the "breathability revolution" and improvements are still being measured only in percentages. Well, we believe that any argument about "level of breathability" is irrelevant if the inside of the fabric still gets damp and clammy during use.
How can a "wet system" keep you dry?
The expanded PTFE film that is used to make eVENT® Fabric cannot be used in raw form for waterproof applications because body oils, sweat, sun lotions, and even makeup will "contaminate" the material over time. These oils provide channels through which water can travel thus rendering the material somewhat less than waterproof. Therefore, to use ePTFE film for waterproof applications, it must somehow be rendered oil-repellant. Traditionally, this has been accomplished by putting a thin, continuous layer of polyurethane (PU) over the surface of the ePTFE to keep oils out. However, this solution creates two new problems. First, it immediately gives up much of the inherent breathability of the ePTFE because its open-pore structure is now covered. Second, because PU absorbs and retains moisture, the inside of the fabric quickly becomes, and remains, damp and clammy. We call this a "wet system". As we see it, the thing you're using to keep dry shouldn't be the reason you're always wet !
Finally. . . a Dry System!
The eVENT Fabrics advantage revolves around a patented method of rendering ePTFE oil-repellant without using a water-absorbing element like polyurethane and while retaining the open-pore structure inherent in the material. This is accomplished with a molecular surface treatment of the individual fibrils that comprise the open-pore structure of the ePTFE material. With this proprietary system - which we call Dry System technology - the moisture vapour you produce is not required to condense into liquid to escape the fabric. Instead, it is allowed to vent directly to the outside without first making the inside of the garment damp and clammy.

Scott's Training Tips

Fat cyclistLet's face it; if you're carrying too much extra weight, cycling - especially uphill - is a lot harder than if you're a lean machine. It's easier, but more expensive; to lose weight from your bike, but it is possible to lose a few pounds of fat from your body - especially if you know why those pounds crept on in the first place.

The equation is a simple one - too many calories in and not enough calories burned means the excess is stored in your body as fat.

The fall is great time to concentrate on shedding a couple of pounds. It is arguably safer and easier to lose weight when you are not training hard. Combining weight loss with hard training often leads to sickness as starving your body inhibits recovery from hard workouts and beats down your immune system. This makes a having a goal of arriving a few pounds lighter by January 1 a smart and safe tactic for a faster 2009.

So what suggestions do I have? There is only one. Make sure your caloric intake is slightly below your calorie needs. No crash diets. No starving. Aim for 1 pound every 2 weeks.

To help you with this be aware of the dreaded "Calorie Creep".

One reason it can be easy to put on weight without realising why is down to 'calorie creep'. Food manufacturers know our love/hate relationships with fat and sugar - the source of 'empty calories' - and have been steadily changing the recipes of our favourite foods. Some breakfast cereals contain around 10% more calories than in 1983. Häagen-Dazs Belgian chocolate ice cream contains 16% more calories than in 1994 and 26% more fat.

Check out some restaurant meals. That little plate of Calamari at East Side Mario's packs a whopping 780 calories for your appetizer. Decisions like skipping the appetizer and sticking to the salad ad up to lost weight. Giving fast food a rain check might be a good decision. Check this out:

- Starbucks Venti Java Chip Frappuccino w/ whipped cream: 600 calories
- Starbucks Grande white chocolate mocha with whipped cream (2% milk): 470 calories
- McDonald's hamburger: 250
- McDonald's Big Mac: 540
- McDonald's large french fries: 570
- Burger King Whopper sandwich with cheese: 760
- Burger King Tendergrill chicken sandwich: 510
- Wendy's Junior Cheeseburger: 270
- Wendy's Original Chocolate Frosty: 430

To counteract this, choose foods as close as possible to their natural state. They tend to be bulkier and will fill you up before you've eaten too many calories - you eat more food but for the same calories as the highly processed calorie-dense snacks.

Most men need 1500-1700 calories each day, just to keep alive and ticking over. Women need 1200-1500 calories. Cycling at moderate pace for 1-hour burns approx 400 calories for a 170lb rider. That means you need to ride 1-½ hours and drink nothing but water just to burn off that Venti latte! To calculate your burn check out http://www.saris.com/CalorieCalculator.aspx

Find your energy balance where food in is equal to energy burned.

If you are working out for less than 1 hour there is no need for sports drinks etc. Just top yourself up with water and eat balanced meals. If you are exercising 90 min plus you may want to use sport drinks, gels etc to avoid boning but don't go overboard. A gel is approx 11 calories, a bar 210 calories and a drink bottle 100 calories.

I hope this spurns you on to be lean next summer by starting this fall!
