Amazing Customers!
|
|
At Wild Rock Outfitters our staff come into contact with some really amazing people in the community that are into activities that can be used as examples of courage, inspiration, and teamwork. Here are some examples that we would like to highlight that embody the spirit of Wild Rock Outfitters.
Greg and Sara Biking
Greg Cooper and his daughter Sara biked across Canada in about 6 weeks to celebrate Sara's graduation from Queen's University.
"I have my iron ring, convocation is pending and exams are over! I am home from school and waist deep training for my temporary career as a biking daughter! It is becoming more and more apparent with the daily bike tweaks and component additions that I may have been more qualified for this position having graduated with a mechanical degree as opposed to my much more static civil engineering education! It happens to be snowing today so we have resorted to duelling spinners in the empty room above the garage, a perfect opportunity to fit my aero bars and watch the end of the hockey game!"
"As Dad is out doing some of the technical stuff, I am filtering through logistics... the first on his list was "how do I add a new page to the blog..." so here it is! The one-month countdown! And here's to many more; rainy training days, bike trips to Peterborough, ridiculous tan lines (my initial Kingston bike trip burn has now started peeling, here comes layer two!), repetitive play lists, newly discovered routes, funny sights (there are some great mailbox names out there!) and father/daughter bonds (practicing now will make it a whole lot easier come day 32!!)"

"Just one Goal" The Kim Vardy Story
Kim completed his first in the Iron Man Triathlon in Lake Placid, New York, which was held on July 25, 2010. The Iron Man Triathlon consists of a 3.86 km (2.4-mile swim), a 180.25 km (112mile) bike ride, and 42.195 km (26.2 mile) run. Kim had just one goal for Iron Man Triathlon, which was to complete the event within the time limit of 17 hours; he completed it in 15hours 8 minutes and 15 seconds. The following is an account of the events that led up to Kim achieving his goal of completing an Iron Man Triathlon.
Entering an Iron Man Triathlon was a plan put into place 5 years ago while I running a 50 mile Cross Country run in the Haliburton Forest Trail Series for my 50th birthday. Five years later at the age of 55, I realized my goal and completed my first Iron Man Triathlon in Lake Placid, New York. As part of my preparation for the Iron Man, I utilized some smaller endurance events to test my fitness and gauge the effectiveness of my preparation efforts. These smaller endurance events were a100mile cross-country run in Haliburton Forest, the Peterborough ½ marathon, and the Cops for Cancer 24hour Battle In The Saddle. Training for the Iron Man was not easy; I experienced several setbacks due to injuries.
During a training run in the winter of 2007 for the 100-mile run in Haliburton Forest, I tore the meniscus in my right knee and had to have surgery to correct this problem. This injury occurred eight weeks prior to the 100-mile cross-country run, and I was not able to compete the run. However, I was I was able to act as a guide runner for Lorraine Pitt, a blind Achilles Athlete for her 25km cross-country run, and I assisted Ralph Wagner through the night section of his 100 mile run. It was a great feeling to see Lorraine and Ralph achieve their goals, and it gave me some much needed motivation to complete my goal of finishing an Iron Man Triathlon.
By the start of 2008, I fully recovered from my knee injury, and resumed some serious training for the Iron Man Triathlon in 2010. The first test of my preparation efforts for the Iron Man Triathlon in 2010 was the 2008 Peterborough ½ Iron Man. My son Kristopher took part in the Peterborough ½ Iron Man with me, and my results indicated that I was on track with my participation efforts. Unfortunately, in June 2009, I fell off a ladder and badly strained my shoulder and back, I was hardly able to walk properly for six months. My hopes of competing in the Iron Man Triathlon for 2010 were fading again. A friend a mine, Gene Jochen, encouraged me to volunteer with him as a bike marshal and water station worker for the Iron Man Triathlon for 2009. "Your Iron Man event is one year away, you will have plenty of time to recover and get fit!" Gene said.
By the beginning of 2010, I was fully recovered and my training was progressing well. Six weeks prior to my participation in the Iron Man Triathlon, I was out training on the bike and experienced some painful cramps within my adductor longus muscle. What else could go wrong? After visiting my massage therapist Dave Kervin and physiotherapist Kylie Gibson, their treatments helped to alleviate some of the pain that I was experiencing from the cramping of my adductor longus muscles. At this point, I was convinced that nothing mattered as long as I could finish the Iron Man Triathlon within the 17hour time limit, even if it meant that I had to walk my bike up the hills.
My son Kristopher has always been a great inspiration to me. At age 10 year old he became bed ridden due to Ankylosing spondylitis, a condition that he has slowly recovered from. By the age of 15, we together ran for his first ½ marathon together; at 16, he did his first ½ Iron Man triathlon. Having my son Kristopher cheering me on at my first Iron Man triathlon helped me to finish within the time limit. Given his experience with and recovery from Ankylosing spondylitis, he is my greatest motivator.
With a time of 15 hours 8 minutes and 15 seconds, I beat the cut off mark. The sights that I saw, the feeling of accomplishment when I crossed the finish line and heard the announcer say "Kim you are an Iron Man" filled me with great pride, but humbled me greatly. I realized that all my efforts were about "Just One Goal".
Kim will go on to do the Halliburton Forest 100-mile cross country race this September 11 - 12th. Wild Rock Outfitters would like to take this opportunity to wish Kim success in this race.

Scott's Rant
|
|
Last month had me re-visiting my roots. When Wild Rock opened in 1992 the first section we expanded was the canoeing and kayak section. For the next decade I spent my spare time exploring rivers of all description. From meandering local rivers and tiny creeks to some of the largest scariest rivers in the Himalayas.
August had Kathy, our 2 year old Clara and I paddling the 100km stretch of the Spanish River from Duke Lake to the Elbow. Fantastic to feel the excitement of rapids ahead, sleeping with the sound of moving water in the background and reducing life to the search for shelter, food and moving along in a silent canoe. Clara loved the trip.
I can see doing more remote trips with Clara. I am always amazed how adaptable these little people are. The front of a canoe became home in no time; especially after Kathy filled the front with 50 pebbles to be tossed in the water at random.
There is something magical about having everything you need for life in a canoe. I am very pleased to have rekindled this spirit. It has been almost a decade since I have explored the rivers of Nepal, Canada and the US in earnest. The draw of class 5 rapids has dulled but the attraction to the "simple" life has grown.
The circle of life offers itself in many disguises.
